The Jewish population south of the USSR in the interwar period: historiographical review

Abstract

Recently, a special interest of native and foreign historians, scientists and scholars is the study of the history of the Jewish problem in Ukraine. In the interwar period established and actively operated command-administrative system in the Soviet Union, which took control of all spheres of public life. For a long time under the pressure of Bolshevik ideology was historical science. Soviet totalitarian regime was vitally interested in the destruction, clandestine manner or falsification of documents that contradicted the official interpretation of history and could give rise of doubts among the public at large in the infallibility of socialist construction. In this context, relevant research is to study the degree of problems in the history of the Jewish minority in the southern region of the USSR 20-30s of XX century. The research was conducted within the periodization of Soviet historiography that exists in the national historical science: 1. The first stage – 1920-ies – related to the implementation of indigenization policy of the USSR and the Ukrainian SSR and characterized by the first single from the National Research topics mainly cultural and educational nature. Literature of the 1920s contains significant factual material, which in general shows the status of national minorities, including Jewish. 2. The beginning of the 1930s – mid 1950s. – through hard ideological control all spheres of Soviet society is clotting research on problems of international relations problems in the history of Ukrainian Jews. 3. During the 1956-1985 influenced the decisions of the XXth Congress an increase in the number of scientific publications with Jewish topics. Thus, the scientific work of the second half of the 1950’s – mid 80’s. Rather modest and aimed at mapping the party concept of socio-economic and cultural reconstruction in Soviet conditions of national minorities. In general, the research authors praised the leading role of the Communist Party, though she actualization minority issues on the eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union, many weighed in thematic growth history, its gradual release of party influence. 4. In the context of the policy of «perestroika» (1985-1991) There are numerous scientific works on a rather critical assessment of the national policy of the Bolsheviks. The democratization of society has caused increased interest in historical research devoted to the analysis of the national policy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, particularly in the USSR. 5. In the period after independence, Ukraine (1991-2015). That the study of history the Jewish community in the USSR goes to a new level; formed a circle of experts and scientific institutions that develop general direction of the history of national ethnic policy and the history of the Jewish people. Research by Shityuk M., Shkvarets V., Mironova I. cover different areas of the historical past of National Minorities in Southern Ukraine, including Jews. This economic problems and social aspects of national cultural policies of the communist government and problems of repression, famine and insurgency Jewish minority.
