Abstract
The article describes the linguistic image of the Archangel Michael and how he is represented in the ukrainian texts of folk literature. It was found that the analyzed image was one of the key images in the ukrainian linguistic cultural tradition which was confirmed by its widespread use in folk texts of different genres. The Christian visions of this Saint as the enemy of devil in the folk image of the world become more vivid submitting to the pragmatic statements in the texts of folk literature. Correspondingly Archangel Michael performs the functions of devils fighter, the patron of hunters and a kind spirit. The permanent attributes of the Saint are his bright sword and red boots. One of the typical loci is the gate that brings closer the image of the Archangel Michael to the images of St. Elias as the fighter of evil spirits and St. Nicholas as the guard of the gate of paradise. The most complete folk beliefs of the Archangel Michael are reected in the texts of ukrainian incantations, where he usually is a talisman against evil forces. In general, the image of the Archangel is characterized by a certain universality, which is reected in the use of his name in incantations of various subjects: from a toothache, wild beasts, against evil eye, witches and the cloud. Thus Saint Michael often acts along with other Christian characters: Saint Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, Ilya as well as he can impersonate the chief god of thunder. The name of the Archangel is often transformed, highlighting the uality of the character necessary to achieve the maximum effect from a pragmatic charm word. The result of such transformations are double names that have arisen as a result of the principle of magical invocation, according to which one element of the name names, and the other one describes and specifies the desired function.
