The peculiarities and methods of translation of compound terms with anthroponyms in English scientific texts

Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of the analysis of the term “anthroponym” as they make a great layer of lexical elements in any language and represent the category “man (human being)” in the texts of different discourse. There is a great number of anthroponyms’ classifications. According to the classification of N. Podilska they are distributed into the proper names, patronymic, family names, generic names, nicknames (pseudonyms and names of animals), cryptonyms, ethnonyms, and the technonyms. If to consider the anthroponyms in scientific literature, it should be noted that the majority of them are proper names and family names. The major function of anthroponyms is to identify the human in the society. All anthroponyms may be also divided into single and poly-semantic anthroponyms. In scientific and technical texts anthroponyms may be divided into the following categories: 1) objects of activities, mechanisms, devices; 2) substances, metals, minerals, alloys; 3) processes, actions; 4) units of measurement; 5) properties and characteristics; 6) physical and mathematical notions and phenomena; 7) methods, modes, and systems; 8) theories and classifications. In this article we highlight that the most widespread terms-anthroponyms are two-component terms. To translate foreign anthroponyms such methods as transcription, transliteration and descriptive translation are used. However, despite the fact that sometimes it is thought that there is nothing difficult in translating compound terms with anthroponyms, it should be mentioned that there are no fixed rules, and the methods used are defined by the translator himself and it depends on different factors in terms of achieving the best adequate translation.
