Journal Title: ІНОЗЕМНА ФІЛОЛОГІЯ - Year 2016, Vol 129, Issue
Abstract
he article examines the role of shortenings in professional languages, including, the language of the tourism industry. A comparison of the properties of shortenings and terms, characterizing their common and distinctive features, is offered. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the role and terminological essence of shortenings and to identify their place in professional vernaculars, in particular, the travel industry vernacular. The aforementioned cases of use in German are compared with their counterparts in Ukrainiane. The article dwells upon the benefits of the use of shortenings as professional words and offers an analysis of the qualities inherent to professional vernaculars and, therefore, professional words, with a further comparison between such characteristics and shortenings. Among the common features of shortenings and word terms are linguistic economy, edgy use, autonomy, ambiguity (in part characteristic of shortenings), and single meaning assignment. Hence, the benefits deriving from the use of shortenings include facilitated communication due to linguistic economy, use of shortenings for identifying several referents as well as effortless word formation, especially when shortenings become initial components of partial abridgements. Also, shortenings lend themselves particularly well to creative uses. The use of professional abbreviated words in the travel industry vernacular is characterized by the fact that they may encode different kinds of travel companies with distinct profiles in very few letters. A further study may focus on a comparison between morphological, syntactic, and textual features of shortenings with a special reference to the chosen field of their application.
