The Qur’an, Qur’anic Exegesis And Woman
Journal Title: Dini Araştırmalar -Altı Aylık Bilimsel Dergi- - Year 2016, Vol 19, Issue 49
Abstract
The aim of this article is to present the content of Qur’anic verses which contain information about women and to identify the way in which they were understood and interpreted in both classic and modern Qur’anic exegeses. In modern times the question regarding women in the Qur’an is considered to be a very serious issue. It is often presumed that this problem can be solved when the Qur’anic verses are interpreted in the light of contemporary norms and values which should then prevent a possible contradiction between the Qur’anic verses and modern criterion. The use of such a modernist and apologist approach should guarantee either remaining loyal to the Qur’an, which is assumed to be supratemporal or to prove that the Qur’an can be up-to-date with each era, which is conferred as being a success. The widespread classic approach, however, does not deem it necessary to discuss an issue like “Women in Islam”. Instead, by not understanding the Qur’anic rulings, which refer to female gender roles, in respect to their own historical social matrix and sociology, they try to explain themselves from a theological and ontological perspective. These two approaches are unanimous in their assumption that every ruling in the Qur’an is - regarding the axiological point of view – equal to each other. Nevertheless, they differ widely, the first approach universalizes the values of modern times in order to defend the universalist character of the Qur’an, whereas the second approach universalizes the cultural codes of the Arabs of the seventh century A.D. Unfortunately, both of these approaches are not aware of their universalizing attempts.
