The Role of the Notch Pathway in Atherosclerosis
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Cardio Biology & Clinical Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Atherosclerosis is one of the primary causes of heart disease and stroke. In industrialized countries, it is the underlying cause of about 50% of all deaths. Atherosclerosis can be considered a form of chronic inflammation resulting from interaction between modified lipoproteins, monotype-derived macrophages, T cells and the cellular elements of the arterial wall. This inflammatory process can ultimately lead to the development of complex lesions or plaques that protrude into the arterial lumen. It is well established that the Notch signalling pathway regulates the functions of each cell type involved in the formation and in the evolution of the atherosclerotic plaques. In this review we will discuss the role of the Notch signalling in the modulation of macrophages, endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells biological functions and how dysregulation of this pathway could potentially affect the onset and progression of atherosclerosis.

Coronary microvascular dysfunction is a group of disorders with heterogenous pathophysiology. At present there are no methods to pinpoint the underlying structural and functional disorder in a given patient. Identificati...
Potential Future Therapies of Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury
Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world. Angioplasty, heart transplantation, thrombolysis, and coronary bypass are general treatment approaches of cardiovascular diseases. All of these...
Non-Cardiac Surgery and Cardiac Evaluation: Where Do We Stand Today?
In present-day practice we frequently come across patients who need to undergo non-cardiac surgery and are either suffering from cardiac disorders or are suspected to have one. Detailed cardiac work of each and every pat...
Non HDL-C as the Primary Target for LipidLowering Therapy: Moving beyond LDLCentric Management
The value of lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is widely known with a large number of studies demonstrating benefit of LDL-C lowering in a wide range of patient populations. Accordingly, LDL-C has been...
