THE SILENCING OF WOMAN IN TIMBERLAKE WERTENBAKER’S THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE AND HER REACTION TO THE SILENCING: A PAGLIAESK APPROACH

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 37

Abstract

This paper analyses the play of English playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, called The Love of the Nightingale with a Pagliaesk approach. Contrary to the feminist approach which considers that women are made victims by the patriarhcal society, Camille Paglia in her Sexual Personae emphasizes that woman and man are equal and a woman- owing to the powers given to her by “the Mother Earth” can be as strong as a man and can defend herself against a man whenever she needs. Thus, the Notion that gods of Olympos should be equal and should live in harmony without war-which has been pointed out in Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy- is reduced, by Paglia, to the man and woman relations in society showing that they should be equal and should live in harmony like Apollon and Dionysos. And, Wertenbaker’s play The love of the Nightingale shows what may happen when this harmony between woman and man is spoilt by the man.
