THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION OF THE POLISH-SPEAKING YOUTH IN LVIV, IVANO-FRANKIVSK AND TERNOPIL REGIONS

Abstract
The article is an attempt to determine the sociolinguistic situation of the young speakers of Polish who live in Western Ukraine. The purpose is to present everyday communicative situations in which the youth speaks Polish, situations, where the change of the language code takes place (from Ukrainian into Polish and vice versa), the language (languages) used in a family communication. I was also interested in sources the pupils learned Polish from, as well as in their opinion about the Polish language functioning in Ukraine. The material was obtained by means of a questionnaire. The questioning covered 453 respondents who declare Polish descent and attend extracurricular educational institutions (Polish Saturday / Sunday schools). Based on the answers of the respondents we can say that the family is the most important factor in the formation of language and national identity of a child. In most communicative situations pupils speak Ukrainian, Polish is mainly spoken at Saturday / Sunday schools, in the Catholic Church and at home. Most of the respondents realize the differences between the Polish language spoken in Ukraine, and the one spoken in Poland.
