Abstract
The scope of the article contains the analysis of the strategies of epideictic discourse and the means of their expression in the genre of political inaugural address. We consider epideictic discourse as an interactive communicative event to commemorate any solemn occasion that involves certain Hearers’ expectations, is mainly controlled, prepared beforehand, and can contain the elements of differ- ent language styles. We made a suggestion that a political inaugural address like any other genres of epideictic discourse can transmit certain societal, cultural, political and other aims via universal macrostrategies, their subordinate substrat- egies and tactics. In political inaugural addresses we have identified and described the universal macrostrategies of the Speaker directed to persuade the Hearer(s) in certain ideas and shape the positive image of the Speaker. Their subordinate substrategies include the strategies for creating situationally relevant psychoemotional state; persuading the Hearer; creating the posi- tion of a supporter or opponent; reconstruction, construction and / or transmission of societal, cultural and legal values as well as the presentation strategies. The Speaker uses a number of corresponding tactics to meet the strategic aims: the tactics of thanking and appealing to main societal values to reach favourable psychoemotional state; the tactics of entreaty, promise and involvement to persuade softly in the “right” ideas; the tactics of separation and incorporation to create the position of a supporter or opponent; the tactics of explicit and implicit nomination to reconstruct or transmit main social, cultural and legal values. The above (sub) strategies and tactics are expressed with the wide range of linguostylistic means, such as, rhetorical tropes: epithets, metaphors, metonymies, collocations, paremiaes; semantic-syntactical means: repetitions, anaphoras, epiphoras; stylistic devices: inversion, parceling, contrasting, rhetorical questions; language means: grammar struc- tures, tenses, parts of speech and others. The presentation strategies have much in common with all other substrategies using the same tactics and expressive means.
