THE TRIBOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF POLYMER COMPOSITES OPERATING IN RECIPROCATING MOTION
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2014, Vol 255, Issue 3
Abstract
The paper presents the results of the tribological results of the polymer composite performed under reciprocating motion that is intended for the regeneration of the cutting tool guides. The matrix of the composite is chemical-setting epoxy resin. The main filler is an iron oxide. The composite also included improving additives, mainly anisotropic solid lubricants – graphite and molybdenum disulphide. Based on the preliminary measurements of mechanical properties, the friction coefficient and the stick-slip effect, the set of the composites exhibiting the best properties were selected for further friction and wear tests. The wear resistance of the composites was tested using a T-17 tribotester. The research was conducted under the following conditions: 100N load, 1 Hz frequency, 25 mm amplitude, 20 000 cycles and lubrication with machine oil. Using the same parameters the tribological characteristics of steel-steel tribosystem were measured. Based on analytical investigations like scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D topography measurements the wear mechanism was described. The effect of the solid lubricants on the wear of composite-steel tribosystem was elaborated. Based on obtained test results, it was concluded that mechanical and tribological properties depends on type and mass ratio of the used tribological modifiers. The most beneficial results were obtained for the composites containing mixed solid lubricants.
