THE WORK MAGIC OF CARPATHIANS AS A COMPONENT OF FAMILY EDUCATION
Journal Title: Гірська школа Українських Карпат - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 14
Abstract
The article deals with the traditions of housekeeping of Ukrainians. They had been formed over a long period and have their own regional characteristics, which are caused by natural and climatic, ethno-cultural, socio-economic and other factors. Their content and nature had been defined by the basic branches of housekeeping – agriculture, livestock, and crafts. Ceremonial and ritual traditional culture and beliefs (economic magic, superstition, warning, folk calendar, meteorology, omens, etc.) have survived until today, as evidenced by the results of a field study that we had been conducted during 2000-2015 in the Carpathians. Methodological basis of the research consists of the leading positions of the theory of scientific knowledge, system-structural and cultural approach. The author applied anthroposophic approach. The purpose of the article is to analyze the impact of the economic magic on education of children in the Carpathians. At this stage the study of this problem showed that the peasants of the region still strictly follow certain «economic prescriptions». An example here might be the economic traditions related to the cycle of summer holidays so-called thunderous. So, at St. Anthony (July 23) it was forbidden to mow, hay, cultivate the soil and so on. Also it was prohibited to work at St. Panteleimon (27 July / August 9). In Western Ukraine it was a thunderous celebration also, the peasants called its patron as a lord of lightning; they believed that Panteleimon protects people and farming from the fire. The Christian church did not welcome such a taboo but farmers followed these rules. On the eve of Christmas and Easter adults and children used to perform a series of ritual actions connected with production. Relevant rites accompanied the beginning and end of the harvest – so called «obzhynky» which were celebrated very solemnly in the Carpathians. Pre-Christian economic traditions still preserved in Hutsulshchyna very well. Thus, traditions of housekeeping are an important component of family education of the personality in Western Ukraine. Most of them are connected with the economic magic.
