Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Педагогіка" - Year 2018, Vol 311, Issue 299

Abstract

The author scrupulously analyzes the factors that may interfere with the successful intercultural interaction between Ukrainian and foreign students. Besides, the article highlights the specific qualities that students must possess in order for intercultural interaction to be mutually beneficial and enjoyable for both parties. Among the theoretical principles of intercultural training, the author emphasizes the need to introduce and implement the principles of multicultural education into Ukrainian university practices. The article accentuates the students’ need for self-awareness since all intercultural communicants are complex cultural creatures, and their beliefs, values, assumptions and communication preferences are the product of their cultural heritage. Another quality that the author points out is empathy that helps students to realize that the representatives of the out-groups are also complex creatures, whose actions are conditioned by deeply rooted cultural values and beliefs. In the case of misunderstanding, intercultural communicators should be looking for reasons of incomprehensible or abusive behavior in the culture of the group that they are interacting with among other significant essential behaviours is collection and analysis of information. Intercultural communicants should identify hidden cultural assumptions in order to understand how culture shapes perceptions, expectations and behavior of all involved groups. Finally, interpretation and transformation of information are also indispensable for a quality intercultural interac-tion. The readiness for successful intercultural interaction is largely determined by the ability of a person to clearly distinguish observation from interpretation. Interpretation of actions and words of representatives of other cultures should be carried out only in the paradigm of their own ethnic culture. Constant awareness of cultural differences will help to avoid aggression, the main cause of which is always a misunderstanding. On the other hand, a clear awareness of one’s own cultural-national consciousness also appears to be a prerequisite for achiev-ing a sufficient level of cultural awareness, without which intercultural interaction is impossible. Cultural educatedness implies mastering the necessary background knowledge and peculiarity of target discourse, allowing any bearer of culture to respond ac-cordingly and understand foreign cultural meanings. The author also focuses on the challenge of implementing the principles of multicultural education into wider practices of Ukrainian universities. The need for this implementation is explained by the growth of ethnic and racial consciousness of people; migration processes, student mobility, all of which greatly enhance intercultural contacts. Besides, world globalization doesn’t only change the economy, but also influences the general process of intercultural relations while the expansion of international coopera-tion that boosts the dialogue between nations and their cultures. All of theses processes allow the peoples to come closer and erase territorial, linguistic, religious, and cultural barriers.
