Tumor M2 pyruvate kinase – a tumor marker and indicator of inflammatory bowel disease activity

Abstract
Tumor M2-PK, the dimeric form of the isoenzyme PKM2 of pyruvate kinase, is secreted by all intensively proliferating cells, especially tumor cells. M2-PK can also be measured in plasma and stool. This marker seems to be a valuable tool in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancer, especially colorectal cancer. M2-PK level is also increased in cases of polyps and adenomas, thanks to which it may also be an effective prophylactic tool. Its sensitivity in diagnosing colorectal cancer is 68.8-91% and specificity 71.9-100%. The possibility of using this marker in monitoring disease activity in inflammatory bowel diseases is also very important. In disease exacerbations the marker’s level is significantly higher than in remissions. Further studies in using the M2-PK marker in medicine are necessary.
