UKRAINIAN AND GERMAN FAMILY NAMES, MOTIVATED BY THE NICKNAMES

Abstract

The article analyzes the modern Ukrainian and German family names, motivated by the nicknames, in particular their lexical and semantic analysis. The purpose of research is to investigate Ukrainian and German names, motivated by the individual nicknames, and to identify common and distinctive features of these names on lexical and semantic basis. The object of our study is based on modern Ukrainian and German names, motivated by the nicknames (impersonal appellatives). The subject of our study is lexical-semantic characteristic of these names. The names for the analysis are derived mainly from modern Ukrainian and German lexicographical sources. In general, the article analyzes more than 600 Ukrainian and nearly 500 German family names. The analyzed names are motivated by different thematic groups: names of animals, birds, plants, tool names, names of food and clothing. The names of the analyzed groups are an invaluable source of information about the past, especially about the economic life of the region in the Middle Ages, preserve the names of objects, food, clothing, which today are obsolete.
