Abstract

In today's scientific space Vasyl Pirko. who studied previously unexplored as-pects of the Ukraine and Donbass past, is outstanding figure However, his scientific achievements and contribution to the progress of historical science are still under-estimated. The person and works of V. Pirko are modestly represented in the aca-demic field. General biographical data and characteristics of his academic activity appeared in the reference books mainly. The submitted information is too brief to form a whole picture of the man and the scientist. The purpose of this paper is to examine the contribution of V. Pirko to the development of historical science. To achieve the aim following tasks are set: formation of the creative biography of the historian, to reveal his contribution to the study of landed property in Galicia, to ana-lyse the contribution to studies of the settlement of Donbass. The used historiographical and biographical materials allowed us to show V. Pirko as a researcher and organizer of historical science. For twenty years, he had been heading the department, rallied around himself the young researchers who con-ducted his own professional researches. Throughout his life he took up the study of topical aspects of history, tried de-lete the "white spots" in historical knowledge. The latter related to the state of Gali-cian countryside in the XVIII century, colonization of south Ukraine in the XVI–XVIII centuries, settlement of Donbass in early modern days. With his professional activity professor V. Pirko contributed to the development of historical science and formation of civil society in Ukraine.
