Vermicompost as a soil supplement to improve growth of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum)
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 8
Abstract
The effects of vermicompost on the growth of tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum) (c.v. Polard) was investigated in a greenhouse experiment. Five levels vermicompost treatments including: 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 % (w/v) were applied as a soil supplement to improve growth of tomato. Growth parameters such as plant heights, shoot fresh and dry weight and root fresh and dry weight were measured. Application of 10 % (w/v) vermicompost produced the highest height. The results showed that vermicompost treatment significantly influenced root lenght. vermicompost treatment significantly affected shoot fresh and dry weight. The highest shoot fresh and dry weight obtained in 10 % (w/v) vermicompost (P ? 0.05). These results suggest that the use of vermicompost should be considered more in organic farming because it is not only an environmentally sound substitute for peat in horticultural growth media but may also have potential for foliar nutrient application and biological disease prevention and control
