Views of teachers on teacher training in Physical Education based on the manual for the First Class (thirteen-year-olds) in Greek Secondary schools

Abstract
In 2006 a manual on Physical Education for teachers of the First Class in Greek Secondary Schools (thirteen year olds) was published by the Pedagogical Institute and distributed to the schools. The purpose of this study is to examine the views of P.E. teachers, school advisors and local sports organizers on the following: a) whether they are satisfied with the instruction they have been given in the use of this manual, b) in what way P.E. teachers would like training based on the manual to be conducted, c) which of the athletic activities included in the manual do they think P.E. teachers most need to be instructed in order to improve their performance. With regard the first question those most satisfied with the instruction given were the school advisors / local sports’ organizers. In responses to the second question, all agree the instruction to be optional. Lastly, in response to the third question; for male P.E. teachers the areas of traditional dance and of equipped gymnastics were indicated, while for women teachers these were football and equipped gymnastics. School advisors / local sports organizers maintain that male P.E. teachers most need instruction in equipped gymnastics and handball, while women teachers in handball and football.
