Violence and Theatre: A Panoramic Outline

Abstract
The objective of this paper is an attempt at an inevitably subjec¬tive and incomplete outline of relationships between violence and theater spanning the period from antiquity up to the end of the 20th century. Based upon the works of selected European and Latin American authors, various ways the discourse of violence functions in theater were presented. It was observed that violence (understood broadly as the intent of causing harm and establishing the relationship of domination), and the notions of conflict, struggle and aggression closely related with it, became the main inspiration and the “driving force” behind theater throughout the period, regardless of aesthetic or ideological trends shaping individual epochs. The paper focuses upon the spectacular nature of acts of violence (both verbal and non-verbal) and their performative power, which makes them a particularly effective theatrical instrument
