Wit based on polisemy and the context
Journal Title: Biuletyn Polskiego Towarzystwa Językoznawczego - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 72
Abstract
The article discusses the role of context in formulating a pun based on word polysemousness. Using quotations from Kabaret Starszych Panów, the author points to the fact that a polysemous joke is dependent on its context and on the type of context determinants, whose order has an indirect impact on the actualization of individual meanings of the polyseme and, therefore, on the resulting puns. The author refers to both types of context: intratextual (lexical-semantic, morphological and syntactic) and extratextual (intertextual).
