ЗАСОБИ КОМУНІКАЦІЇ ГРЕЦЬКОМОВНИХ КОРИСТУВАЧІВ MMORPG-ІГОР

Abstract
У статті з’ясовано засоби спілкування грецькомовних користувачів сучасних MMORPG-ігор, які використовуються ними залежно від комунікативної ситуації. Проаналізовано причини та ситуації використання цих засобів, їхнє походження. Визначено сутність термінів «MMOG» та «MMORPG». Висвітлено особливості застосування штучних мов в умовах комп’ютерних ігор. This article investigates communication aspects of Greek-speaking massively multiplayer online role-playing games’ (MMORPG) users: the different means of communication may be used by players to create the best mutual understanding tool in a particular communication situation. The research on the issue is expected to shed some light on the topic of communication means used by Greek-speaking MMORPG gamers, while providing answers regarding the aspects in question. The article starts with an overview of the literature covering related topics, such as psychological profile, social behavior and MMOG addiction of Greek players, connection between their daily in-game and real life, online game culture in general and live action role-playing games and MMORPG similarities, followed by an analysis of the two principal definitions: MMORPG and MMOG, their Greek and Ukrainian equivalents as well as the analysis of the term Greeklish and its origin. Analyzing a number of MMORPG-related articles, forum topics and in-game chat videos, it was possible to mark out frequently used ways of communication and describe the situations when Greeklish and English terms are used. The information sources used during the research allow determining the Greek-speaking MMORPG users’ short and clear manner of expressing themselves. The study goes beyond simply documenting the general tendency and circumstances of using a particular way of communication. It correlates the choice of a particular term with a specific reason, focusing on the communication problems. The results of the research make it possible to conclude that there are two main ways for a Greek-speaking MMORPG user to express himself depending on the communication conditions – using Greeklish or English terms. The reason is that the use of English promotes understanding not only between Greek-speaking and English-speaking users, but also between all foreign users playing on European servers. The English terms used by MMORPG players contribute greatly to the international communication which is one of the main purposes of the massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Yet, on the other hand, using such a great amount of Roman letters also has a negative impact on the Greek language depriving it of a huge sociolectical layer. The in-game and out-of-game communication manner serves as the reason of using Greeklish helps Greek-speaking MMORPG players to keep using their mother tongue and at the same time form short and clear sentences their interlocutors can easily understand.
