Abstract

With Poland's regaining of independence, one of the most important problems was society's health. Particularly bad looked the health state in the rural or provincial envi-ronment. Among the reasons of poor health state was the lack of elementary knowledge about health and hygiene, the lack of medicines, hard material situation, overcrowded flats and insufficient medical aid. Such unsatisfactory situation in a cru-cial way affected the health of inhabitants in the Pińczów district. Health was becom-ing a subject of inhabitants' interest occasionally, when an illness occurred as a last resort. The discussed environment, due to hard material conditions, the lack of any sanitary-hygienic education and health unawareness, did not feel the need to seek med-ical aid. The aim of the article is to draw attention to the health awareness of inhabit-ants living in the Pińczów district in the interwar period. Among the topics connected with health, the matter of maternity and noticeable lack of maternity aid are going to be put forward. The problem of hygiene, culture, basic body care, living conditions, treatment and costs of hospitalization are also mentioned. The problem of medical aid took up a significant place in district and parish administrative actions on the discussed area. In the case of the Pińczów district, a progress in health protection could be seen. Still, throughout the interwar period not all society needs were successfully fulfilled.
