Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pharmacology - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Postoperative pain is the pain developed after surgical trauma and due to inflammatory reaction. Analgesic prescribed to postoperative patients differ with different patients, as pain is subjective symptoms. But rational prescription of analgesic is also important to enhance the efficacy of drugs and to prevent adverse effects. Hence study was conducted to analyse the prescription pattern of analgesic in postoperative patients. Materials and Methods: The study was observational and retrospective type, conducted during March 2016 to January 2016 at SVJCT hospital. The data was collected from case sheets with history of patient underwent major surgical operation from different department. The total 72 patients case sheets were collected for study of analgesic prescription pattern. Results: In total 72 patients, numbers of male patients were more compared to female patients. On the day of surgery 70 patients received monotherapy and 2 patients received combination of analgesic drugs. But in first, second and third postoperative day combination of therapy was increased to 44%. Diclofenac (45.68%) was most commonly used drug for monotherapy. Number of patients received combination of therapy was 38(52.77%) and most commonly used combination was diclofenac + paracetamol (55%). Numbers of drugs used as generic name were less compare to brand name. Conclusions: The diclofenac was commonly prescribed for postoperative pain relief, both in monotherapy and combination therapy. It shows postoperative pain management was more satisfactory and evidence based practice. The prescription pattern was not rational related to more use of brand name rather than generic name.
