Biodegradation of anthracene and dibenzothiophene in model oil by the desulfurizing cells of Micrococcus halobius ED3
Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 11
Abstract
Micrococcus halobius ED3 was isolated from the soil in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India and investigated for its potential to remove polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) like anthracene and polyaromatic sulfur heterocycles (PASH) like dibenzothiophene (DBT). M. halobius ED3 was found to be effective in degrading anthracene and DBT by 65% and 50% respectively when cultured in Basal Salts Mineral (BSM) medium containing 0.1% w/v anthracene or DBT as sole carbon source under complete aqueous conditions. Degradation of anthracene in the presence of hydrocarbon (n-hexadecane) was enhanced by 32% whereas DBT degradation remained unaffected. The strain preferentially degraded anthracene when cultured on anthracene / DBT mixture (1:1), under aqueous as well as hydrocarbon-aqueous biphasic conditions. M. halobius ED3 had a broader range of desulfurization as it could desulfurize diesel (Initial sulfur content 500 mg kg -1 ) by 17% within 10 days. The results suggest that the strain may have the potential to be used for obtaining fuels with lower polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and sulfur content, thereby lowering their environmental emissions.
