Changing the Channe of Talent: Child Education in the Thought of Early Republican Period Writers İsmail Hakkı Baltacıoğlu and Ali Kami Akyüz

Abstract

In the early republican period, the question of what kind of society we wanted was not independent of what kind of education we wanted. The young republic realized its most important reforms in the field of education in order to get rid of the image of a sick man and to show a way out to the war-weary people. The assumption that one cannot be an adult without being a child can be considered the starting point of educational policies. This article focuses on the "upbringing of children" by making a particular limitation in the educational policies of the early republican period. The study is based on the documentary survey method. In the 1938 and 1939 editions of Cumhuriyet, Ali Kami Akyüz, Peyami Safa's uncle, wrote thirty-two (32) articles titled "Child Terbiyesi." The articles are divided into four themes: "characteristics of children," "punishment," "school-teacher-family," and "willpower-impulse." İsmail Hakkı Baltacıoğlu's book "Children's Terbiyesi" was evaluated to support the digital content. To summarize the study's results, authority, obedience, discipline, and order were examined based on pedagogical concerns and explained with equivalent concepts. Namely, authoritarianism was equated with authority, and obedience-fear was equated with freedom-respect. Based on this equation, liberal discipline was elaborated instead of harsh discipline. Loyalty to the regime is not based on fear but on reverence.
