Abstract
Gender identities are a constitutive dimension of working class identity such as their political relations and trade-union activism experiences. These dimensions are present and play key roles -in varying degrees- in the relations between management and labor within the factory plant and defne to different extents the nature of social struggles. This paper addresses gender relations and labor conflict among working class men employed in two dynamic industry frms - Propulsora Siderúrgica and Rio Santiago Shipyard (in Ensenada region, Province of Buenos Aires)- during a period of intensifed labor struggle 1973-1975. The relational approach to class and gender and the specifc notions implied in the concept of masculinity are put into the understanding and reconstruction of these workers’ strategies and experiences. Our hypothesis states that during the height of labor unrest in each plant, common notions and vulgar defnitions of what being male worker and / or activist were subverted among these workers, affecting both individual and collective identity features thus altering their relations with the production and work process, and the process of political and union grassroots activism.
