COGNITIVE DYSONANCE IN THE NARRATIVE TEXT (“WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE” BY MYKHAILO KOTSIUBYNSKYI)

Abstract

The following article considers the aesthetic reaction of the reader based on the interaction of verbal and nonverbal communication of the characters. The object of the investigation is a short story “What Has Been Written in the Book of Life” by Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. The verbal aspect embodies itself by means of quotation discourse (dialogue cues and internal speech), whereas the nonverbal one is implemented through the actions of the characters, their gestures, facial expressions, emotions and the narrative pause. The game of contexts comprises the way of provoking the reaction of the readers. The aesthetic reactions of the reader in the text under investigation are the result of the convergence of two contexts: cognitive dissonance and the effect of pity.
