COMPARISON OF EXERCISE CAPACITY IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN EITHER OFF OR ON HORMONAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY (HRT)

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 6

Abstract

Background. Changes in body composition, associated with increased fat issue content, mainly subcutaneous and visceral, impaired physical performance capacity, higher risk of osteoporosis and emotional disturbances, are observed in postmenopausal women. It seems that hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) may increase physical performance tolerance, while decreasing fat tissue content and improving muscle strength and cardiovascular efficiency. The aim of the study was to compare exercise capacity in postmenopausal women off or on HRT.Material and methods. Forty (40) postmenopausal women were included into the study: twenty (20) off (Control) and twenty (20) on HRT. Their exercise capacity was determined by the Harvard Step Test and Martinett’s protocol. Additionally, the fat tissue content, body mass index (BMI), the waist:hip ratio (WHR) and bone mineral density in the lumbar spine were evaluated.Results. No statistical differences were found, comparing BMI, WHR and the fat tissue content between postmenopausal women off and on HRT. In both groups of postmenopausal women, physical performance induced a similar reaction of the cardiovascular system, relying on increased pulse rate and blood pressure but restoration of the initial values was faster in women on HRT. In postmenopausal women on HRT, fat tissue content and distribution correlated positively with blood pressure, pulse rate, either at rest or after physical exercise, independently of its type.Conclusions. Exercise capacity in postmenopausal women on HRT is slighty better than in off HRT subjects.
