Continium of a typical word-building paradigm of verbs motivated by temporal nouns to denote seasons.

Abstract

The article investigates word-building possibilities of verbs in the contemporary Ukrainian language motivated by the temporal nouns to denote seasons. The investigation was done with the focus on the word-building paradigm as a complex word-building unit which comprises the whole set of derivatives directly motivated by the derivation word. The word-building paradigm is an adequate stem-centred aspect of studying word-building phenomena, processes, which anticipates the focus on the derivative stem which allows predicting possible derivatives, thus studying the word-building potential of a certain word in a systematic way. Parametric characteristics of the word-building paradigm, mainly the length, which is measured by the number of morphological zones, which are formed depending the part of speech of the derivative units, and the depth depending on the number of derivatives which can express the same word-building meaning, are relevant metrics of the word-building potential of substantive verbs as the top of the paradigm. The article’s object are the verbs to summer, to winter and to spring. The correlation of their semantics with the verbs of action, process or state determine their word-building potential which forms the word-building paradigm. Depending on the part of speech of the deverbatives, the word-building paradigm of top verbs with morphological zones was structured. Within every zone semantic positions were fulfilled with the top verbs by means of certain word-building formants, the ability of derivatives to develop additional semantic nuances were observed.
