CRITERIA AND PECULIARITIES OF ENGLISH STABLE COMPARATIVE UNITS’ IDEOGRAPHIC CLASSIFICATION

Abstract

The article under consideration deals upon the peculiarities and criteria of English stable comparative units’ classification. Different approaches to the problem of a simile’s structural components are discussed in the work. Systematization stages, semantic and structural criteria of similes’ selection and their further differentiation have been proposed in the article. Although a huge number of scientists have already analyzed this figure (K. I. Mizin, V. V. Vinogradov, L. A. Lebedeva, A. V. Kunin, V. N. Manakin, Ch. Bally, J. Seidl, R. Moon) some aspects of similes in particular criteria of their classifica- tion still stay uninvestigated and need deep analysis. So the object of our article is to find out and describe the main ways of English comparative units’ systematization into ideographic groups. Researches propose various definitions of this language unit, but in our investigation we regard similes as stable (with possible variation) structural-semantic constructions which include four components: 1) the subject (what is compared); 2) the base (the feature due to which the process of comparison takes place); 3) the comparative conjunction (like, as, as... as, as if, as though); 4) the object (some standard with which the subject is compared). We remark on the importance of comparative conjunction as one of the significant linguistic index of the comparison process. It must be also mentioned that the subject of a comparative unit is often implicit or even absent which can be explained by similes’ special nature. This fact should be taken into account while classifying comparative figures in subject groups. Similes’ selection and their further systematization in ideographic classes are held with the help of structural and semantic criteria relying on the left part of the comparative structure which includes the subject and the base of compar- ison. The differentiation process can be divided into several stages: 1) separation of a simile’s compounds; 2) detection the meaning of the subject or the comparison base; 3) interpretation of a comparative unit’s figurative sense; 4) a simile’s fixing into a particular class. Each ideographic group is further divided into smaller subgroups according to general semantic and structural features of investigated English stable comparative units.
