CURRENT TRENDS IN THE MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF ENDOMETRIOSIS

Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 1

Abstract

The term endometriosis has been assigned to a condition where there are lesions containing endometrium-like glands and stroma at extrauterine sites. Though these ectopic lesions can occur nearly anywhere in the body, most often they are located in the pelvis. The condition is very common, benign, chronic and is an estrogen-dependent disorder. The symptoms can be extremely distressing and debilitating, such as pelvic pain, severe dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia and infertility. Despite extensive research already done across the world, this disease still remains a mystery disease. While the pathogenesis of endometriosis is still enigmatic and highly complex, there are many research studies which suggest that endometriosis is part of an endometrial reproductive dysfunction syndrome. For prevention of complications, it is important that diagnosis is made early in a woman's life.
