STUDY OF MATERNAL SERUM LIPIDS AND LIPOPROTEINS IN PREGNANCY INDUCED HYPERTENSION

Abstract
Introducon: Pregnancy induced hypertension occurs in 7% to 10% of pregnancies and is an important cause of foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Vasospasm and endothelial cell damage account for many of the pathological changes seen in pregnancy induced hypertension affecng mulple organs like kidney, uterus, placenta and brain. Objecve: The objecve of this study was to study the mean lipid levels in women with pregnancy induced hypertension and compare it with normal pregnancy. Lipid levels of pregnant women with pregnancy induced hypertension with intrauterine growth retardaon were also compared with pregnant women with normal babies. Material and methods: It was a case control study in which 100 pregnant women were studied aged 18- 35 years with period of gestaon greater than 20 weeks.These women were divided into three groups- Group A (controls)included normal pregnant women without any medical complicaon, group BI included pregnant women with pregnancy induced hypertension and group BII included pregnant women with pregnancy induced hypertension and intrauterine growth retardaon. Lipid profile in all the three groups were studied and compared. Results and conclusions :In the present study, there was significant increase in the serum triglycerides and VLDL in pregnant women with pregnancy induced hypertension as compared to normotensive pregnant women. Total cholesterol levels were increased, HDL levels were decreased and LDL levels were increased in pregnant women with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) but these changes were not significant as compared to controls.
