DON JUAN OR «LUCIFER OF MANICHEAN DOCTRINE»: CONTAMINATION OF ANTINOMIES IN DRAMATIC TEXTS (Lesya Ukrainka, B. Shaw)

Abstract

Ukrainian and English invariants of donzhuaniana from the standpoint of antinomies contamination combining the elements of traditional models in opposite pairs (Don Juan / Tristan) are compared in the article. The object in this comparative selection are dramatic English and Ukrainian works «Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy» by B. Shaw and «Stone owner» by Lesya Ukrainka. Our work is guided by sporadic observations on interpreting the traditional image of Don Juan by English playwright and Ukrainian author, presented in works by V. Aheeva, T. Hundorova, N. Zborovska, A. Nyamtsu, E. Nenadkevych, O. Volosyuk, V. Ivashyna, D. de Rougemont, E. Bentley, J. Pearson. Conversely, for today there are no studies in which relevant national invariants of donzhuaniana in works by recognized coryphaeus of «drama of ideas» are analysed from the perspective of Don Juan / Tristan antithesis. This would enable to show not only their typology (invariants of traditional model), but also the nuances of national, cultural and individual author’s specificity, particularly the aspects which are caused by unconscious assimilation of the elements of courtly aesthetics by particular creative personality. The purpose of this article is to establish the most significant manifestations of contamination of antinomies in the defined pair of traditional images. Traditional model of donzhuaniana in the play by English playwright is implemented fragmentary on the motive level preserving recognition element. Lesya Ukrainka’s drama «Stone master» is full of consonant ideas in which the structure of traditional plot model implemented in previous epochs is generally preserved but filled with new original content. The image of Don Juan in Lesya Ukrainka’s «Stone owner» and B. Shaw’s «Man and Superman: A Comedy and a Philosophy», in our view, reflects a peculiar contamination of antinomies: semantic complex of this image combines, on the one hand, features of typical «classic» Don Juan, and on the other, characteristics of its antipode, Tristan. Owing to the author's transformation, «destruction» of the content sphere of invariants in «antonymous» pair of traditional images happens, and instead ambivalent structure, which includes the signs of both semantic models forms.
