EFFECT OF NORDIC WALKING ON SELECTED RESPIRATORY PARAMETERS IN PERSONS OVER 55 YEARS OF AGE AND THE EVALUATION OF THIS FORM OF ACTIVITY BY THE PRACTICING PERSONS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2011, Vol 27, Issue 2

Abstract

Nordic Walking (NW) is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. It is based on physiological marching technique and pushing the body off the ground using specially designed poles. The goal of the study was analysis of the effect of NW on selected respiratory parameters in persons over 55 years of age and assessment of this form of movement activity by practicing individuals. The sample comprised 33 subjects (29 females and 4 males), the participants of the Third Age University. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups. Group I practiced fitness (Ft) involving aerobic exercise. Group II practiced NW. Additionally this group subjects assessed NW using a tallored questionnaire.A statistically significant, greater improvement in vital capacity (VC) and FVC parameters was noted in Group II subjects as compared to Group I. FEV1 parameter si-gnificantly improved only in Group II.1. NW exercises contributed to a significantly greater improvement in respiratory parameters as compared to the group performing standard fitness exercises. A clear tendency to bigger differences between the initial and final measurements was observed in this group. 22. NW was very well assessed by the training subjects. Marching with poles may become a popular and commonly practiced form of activity among elderly individuals due to the technical simplicity and little load applied to the body.
