ENHANCING THE STABILITY OF DIESEL VEHICLE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE BY IMPROVING CATALYTIC CONVERTER'S CONSTRUCTION

Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of the article is to investigate ecological characteristics of a diesel vehicle with different types of catalytic converters, the effect of their installation on the gas-dynamic resistance of exhaust system, the external noise of the vehicle. Findings. The work was carried out in order to increase the stability of the environmental performance of a diesel vehicle by creating conditions under which the catalyst contamination with carbon black decreases. Methyodology. The researches were conducted in laboratory conditions on motor and gasdynamic stands and in operat-ing conditions. Under operating conditions, the research was carried out on the KrAZ-6510 dump truck with installation of catalytic converters of two types in the release system: with block catalysts and the granular one. Practical value. The reasons for changing environmental indicators are established, the recommendations for improving their stability are given. While applying each of these types of neutralizers with increasing vehicle mileage, the vehicle environmental performance deteriorates. The vehicle environmental performance deterioration with a granular catalyst has occurred due to the fact that in the catalytic converter some voids were formed because of granules erosion so the part of exhaust gases, passing through these voids, was not purged. In a vehicle equipped with a catalytic converter with block catalyst, environmental degradation was caused by contamination of catalytic block channels with carbon black, which led to an increase in the exhaust gases flow rate and a decrease in the volume of the catalyst it interacts with. Results. The results of the research confirmed the need to provide conditions under which the contamination of catalytic blocks with carbon black decreases. It is proposed to install an additional cone in front of the catalytic unit, the geometric parameters of which should let the flow of exhaust gases be evenly divided in the central and peripheral areas. This also gives the op-portunity to purge periodically the catalytic unit contaminated with black carbon. According to the results of the re-search the patent of Ukrainian was obtained.
