Journal Title: Przegląd Pediatryczny - Year 2006, Vol 36, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of the study was to estimate the condition of newborns from birth of mothers aged under 18 years. Material and me- thods: The study group was formed by alive neonates of mothers aged below 18 years, who were born in the I Chair of Gynaeco-logy and Obstetrics of the Medical University in Łódź in the period from 1.05.2003 till 31.12.2004. The control group consisted of newborns delivered by woman aged 20-30 years. Some neonatal and perinatal parameters were compared in both groups and elabo-rated statistically. Results: There were 47 mothers under 18 in our material. The average age was 17.3 and the youngest girl was 14. The body weight increase in teenagers during pregnancy was from 5.5 kg to 27 kg. The percentage of premature deliveries reached 14.9%. The majority of index newborns was delivered naturally - 61.7% and the rest were born by caesarean section-38.3%. The neonates' birth body weight varied from 1700 g to 4290 g and the estimation by Apgar score varied from 6 to 9. Conclusions: 1. The condition of the neonates of teenage mothers according to birth weight, fetal age and clinical complications did not differ form those born of older mothers. 2. The Apgar score in the newborns delivered by teenagers was significantly lower than the estimation by Apgar test in case of newborns delivered by woman between 20 and 30.
