FACTORS DETERMINING THE SENSE OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 2

Abstract

The normalization of the life of people with disabilities can and should be examined in terms of creating the quality of their lives (Dykcik 2001). In this work, the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities is understood – after D. Felce (1997, p. 132) – as an overall well-being (wellness) which comprises objective descriptors and subjective evaluations of physical, material, social, productive, and emotional well-being made in accordance with one’s personal values. The study aimed to find out about the quality of life of people with mild intellectual disabilities in early adulthood. It took into consideration the assessment of quality of life given by individuals with mild intellectual disabilities. A diagnostic poll was the main research method and additionally, the case-study method was used. Participants were people working in the open labor market and earning a living on their own and unemployed ones, living with their generational families, with normal intellectual functioning (two groups) and with intellectual disabilities (two groups). There were 160 participants in the study. Summing up, the level of satisfaction with one’s life was assessed highest by the participants with normal intellectual functioning who work, it was lower in the individuals with intellectual disabilities who work, and it was the lowest in the participants with disabilities who do not work. The research findings show that the sense of the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities is significantly influenced by the possibility of working and earning one’s living independently. Therefore, the main implications for rehabilitation in this area will relate to necessary changes in an individual himself/herself and to preparing him/her for becoming an employee, which is a precondition for improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities in early adulthood.
