GERMAN-LANGUAGE LITERATURE IN GALICIA (1848-1918) THROUGH THE PRISM OF LINGUISTIC AND CULTURAL UNIVERSALS: A PRE-TRANSLATION STUDIES ANALYSIS

Abstract
The present paper begins with an overview of classical translation theories which illustrates the importance of the linguo-cultural approach. It offers an analysis of the cultural differences between the peoples of Galicia in the late 19th – early 20th c., as refl ected in the region’s Germanlanguage literature of the period. A pre-translation studies analysis of the artistic prose of Galician Germanlanguage authors (1918-1948) was conducted. We owe the emergence of the language culture approach as a new perspective in translation studies to the rapid growth of interest in intercultural communication. The lack of affi nity between cultures is a source of great challenges for the translator who faces various cultural concepts. In this regard, the key issue of translation studies is the translation of cultures which involves specifi c insights into the ways of thinking, behavior and worldviews of different nations. Thelanguage cultural theory, which is yet to become commonplace in the study of literary translation, is singled out alongside the traditional linguistic, cognitive and pragmatic approaches. Translation cannot be refl ected upon apart from culture, since almost every artistic work contains culturally marked language. This makes the study of the rendition of cultural universals of the source text in thetranslation worthwhile. The studies of G. Hofstede give us an understanding of the worldviews of Galicia’s three distinct national communities in the late 19th-early 20th c. The translator should choose between the strategies of alienation and domestication during the process of translation of culturally marked texts.The quality of the translation rests upon the understanding of the author’s intention by the translator.
