Gros mots d’un chroniqueur politique du Printemps érable québécois

Abstract
In 2011, the Quebec government imposed a 75 % raise of university tuition fees. This provoked a student outcry and led them to respond with an unlimited general strike starting in February 2012. This agitation encouraged the spread of the crisis and a questioning of the government and its neoliberal policies, which led to an early election in September 2012 of a new government. This political crisis, known as the Maple Spring, triggered a schism in Quebec society. We propose the results of a discourse analysis of the writings of an influential political columnist, Richard Martineau, who has built a reputation as a right-wing polemicist and hardliner towards students. His daily chronicles published in Le Journal de Montréal, as well as his blog posts and tweets from his Twitter account in 2012, constitute the literature reviewed. In addition to his arguments, his use of language (especially the swear words used) is highlighted, showing the slang form of Quebec French (joual, a sociolect resulting from popular culture). However, his writings also display the more sophisticated form of the language and the using of more refined québécismes.
