Abstract
The article deals with the issue of lexical homonymy in the process of translation and investigates the way of translating “false friends of interpreter” as a problem of intercultural communication. It covers a significant number of issues concerning the borrowings from European languages as a result of international contacts with other political, cultural, and economic environments, which lead to the creation of linguistic enclaves with mutual supranational elements. The article studies the inter-lingual homonyms in English and Ukrainian languages, particularly, it discloses different points of view on inter-lingual equivalents of the homonymous character. Inter-lingual homonymy concept has been under studying as well as the reasons of forming such phenomenon in the compared languages. Attention is paid to the importance of adequate translation of inter-lingual homonyms. The paper presents some cases of inter-lingual homonyms and proposes translation techniques to resolve them. Considerable attention is paid to the fact that when contrasting two language sign systems, we have to deal with the clash of cultures. Consequently, due to such interactions some wrong associations may emerge. The use of the translation methods mentioned in the paper would be helpful in the process of intense studying. Thus, suggested ways can be efficiently used. In order to avoid mistakes in the translation of inter-lingual homonyms it is recommended to remember that the word can have different meanings, so it is inevitably important to choose you the most successful counterpart, paying attention to the content and, if possible, to the entire context, as well as its genre and style. The general aspects of inter-lingual homonymy are determined through the generalization of experience training translators offered by scientists. We come to the conclusion that the integrated use of various translation methods as well as personal translating experience will motivate future translators to work harder and facilitate the development of their competence. The goal determines the following tasks: to consider different cases of inter-lingual homonymy as well as to offer some methods of identifying and conveying.
