Isolation and characterization of mucilage obtained from Abutilon indicum leaf and seed

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 5

Abstract

Gums and mucilage obtained from plants have been for a long time used in several industries like paper, textile, cosmetics etc. and very commonly in pharmaceuticals for thickening, emulsifying, suspending, and coating materials in micro encapsulation. In view of importance of excipients in pharmaceuticals for the fabrication of dosage forms there should be another possibility and a quest for new, cheaper and readily available sources of excipients. The present study involves the isolation of mucilage from the leaves and seeds of plant Abutilon indicum, although the whole plant of Abutilon indicum has been used in traditional medicine, but there has been no report on the isolation and characterization of mucilage obtained from leaf and seed. The mere isolation of mucilage from a source is not sufficient to establish it as an excipient so for this reason its evaluation for different physiochemical factors has been carried out and it is matched with 3 widely used excipients in the pharmaceutical industry, Acacia, a natural gum used as an excipient, HPMC E 15 LV and Sodium Carboxy Methyl Celulose, which are semi synthetic excipient. The present study showed optimistic results in comparison of the already established excipient.
