Manipulation in mass media: components and resistance

Abstract

The views of researchers and scientists on the nature of manipulation, its crucial spheres such as memory (short-term and long-term), thinking and emotional world of a person are in focus. The analysis of the researches gives the grounds to state that it is long-term memory which is the likable target of a manipulator as it is related to the past events and associations and the so-called emotional memory as well. Also, the manipulator uses the images (visual, audible and verbal) or refers to certain historical events or dates to activate the emotional memory. At the same time, thinking as a mental process also turns out to be a crucial aspect of manipulation as it is the rational thinking which compensates the lack of senses to perceive the world around us. It is thinking which leads to the ideas, political views and national identity formation. In terms of society, the collective thinking creates the national concepts. Emotional sphere is the product of the human needs’ thinking. According to the needs pyramid, the need to belong to a society/certain group is one of the leading emotions in our life which is also a target. The main manipulative methods are the following ones: labelling, negative associations creation, counter associations creation, appealing to the authority (facts or documents), etc. Accordingly, the typical resistance methods are the following: distancing from the manipulator and the critical thinking involvement.
