Neuropsychiatric Comorbidity And Associated Factors In Geriatric Outpatients Attending A Tertiary Care Neuropsychiatric Clinic For Elderly

Abstract

Background: Neuropsychiatry is the psychiatric subspecialty that deals with the psychological and behavioural manifestations of brain disease. Neuropsychiatry is closely allied with cognitive and behavioural neurology. There is less literature available on neuropsychiatric morbidity and related factors in Geriatrics from India. Aims and Objectives: To assess patterns of neuropsychiatric morbidities, demographic factors, pharmacotherapy, among geriatric outpatients referred to the neuropsychiatric clinic for elderly. Materials & Methods: It was a cross sectional survey to study the patterns of Neuropsychiatric comorbidity and associated factors in geriatric outpatients. The inclusion criteria comprised of cases who were referred to the Neuropsychiatric Clinic for elderly and were clinically interviewed by the Consultant and were given appropriate clinical diagnosis and provided standard psychiatric and psychological care, Data was entered in excel sheet and Data collected was analysed using SPSS 20. Results: A total of (n= 116) patients with men (63. 79 %) and (36. 2 %) women were part of our study. Mean age of these patients was 66. 8 years. Majority belonged to the lower socio-economic strata. Most common neurological diagnosis presented were of Cerebral Atrophy, Multi Infarct State, Stroke, Seizure disorders, Movement disorders and SOL, most common psychiatric diagnosis were that Dementia, Neurocognitive disorder, Late onset Psychosis, Late onset Depression, Late onset OCD, Late onset BPAD, Late onset Panic disorder, OCD, Delusional disorder. Pharmacotherapy comprised of cognitive enhancers, anti - depressants, antipsychotics, along with multivitamin supplementation. Conclusion: We conclude that Neuropsychiatric morbidity and pharmacology have distinct trends relevant to our study setting
