Journal Title: Dini Araştırmalar -Altı Aylık Bilimsel Dergi- - Year 2014, Vol 17, Issue 44
Abstract
Nichiren lived in Japan between 1222 and 1282. After completing his education, in 1253 he proclaimed his doctrine and established a new school. Nichiren, as a person with the traditional and nationalist tendencies, tried to melt Japanese folk beliefs and Buddhist teachings in a pot. He argued that in Kamakura period during which he lived the false religious teachings spread out and schools increased the heresy of their adherents, and thus harshly criticized the religious and political authorities and also made audacious recommendations and, therefore, was punished several times by the political authority. However, when it came out that he was right in some estimates and foresights of his, his ideas found followers among the Japanese people. The fundamental basis of the teachings of Nichiren was Hokekyo. According to him, this book includes the essence and mysterious aspects of sacred rules of Dharma preached by Sakyamuni Buddha. On the basis of fundamental teachings of Nichiren’s Hokekyo, this mystery and essence was re-understood, and thus the instant enlightenment, social salvation and moral virtues found their real values
