Prehistoric occupations in the uruguayan atlantic coast. Current studies in the Negra lagoon
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
This paper presents the main lines of research on coastal hunter-gatherers made in the last 20 years on the uruguayan Atlantic coast. Particular attention is given to the problems posed by the ongoing investigations in the basin of the Negra Lagoon (Rocha, Uruguay) around the human occupation of Early and Middle Holocene. The investigation of the early colonization in the basin of the Negra Lagoon began to take interest in recent years, from the identifcation of early levels of occupation of the Los Indios site, dated between ca. 8510 ± 40 and 7100 ± 160 years BP. Similarly, on the shore of the lagoon were surface fnds of fshtail points and paleontological material, using an episode of downspout. These circumstances led to the design of a working strategy for the basin of the Negra Lagoon. This work sought to establish relationships between the archaeological and paleoenvironmental existing collections and new explorations made. From the results, we have been able to confrm human occupation of the area for different times of prehistory.
