Sadness and tears in the Holy Gospel

Abstract

The article is devoted to understanding sadness and tears in the Gospel. The author analyzes the negative emotions in the first four books of the New Testament. Importance of the Gospel for formation of the Medieval Rus spiritually culture and its leading role in the formation of worldview and mentality of its people are emphasized. The theological content of sadness and tears is disclosed in the research through general scientific, linguistic, and special historical methods. During the analysis of the Holy Scripture texts, all direct statements and indirect situational contexts about evangelicals joyless emotions were selected. Based on received information, various kinds of sorrow and tears manifestations are grouped by their importance in the spiritual life of man. The author selects the natural, spiritual and joyless sinful emotions and profoundly analizes the causes and circumstances that predetermine sadness and sorrow in books of the four Evangelists. This allows to reveal their origin and define scheme of emotions assessment in Christian ethics. Along with excerpts from the Holy Scriptures are authoritative interpretation of the theologians, whose vision expresses the correct canonical theological view of the analyzed passages. This is the attitude, cultivated in medieval society due to the constancy of Christian theology. The result of the research is identifying the ideal emotions of sadness and crying in the Christian Middle Ages society. Christian standards of behavior and display of sorrow and tears are revealed. Thereby, the exemplar of cultural practices, including the medieval mentality, based on evangelical values, is characterized.
