Self-managment in Latin America and Argentina: Some historical references for its analysis
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3
Abstract
This paper presents a historical construction of a series of self-management labor experiences mainly in Latin America and Argentina at the (late) 19th and 20th century. This outline will allow us to underline some common and divergent elements between the previous experiences and the processes of self-management which occurred in Argentina at the beginning of the 1990’s and this century. The self-management processes that have arisen historically have been oriented towards overcoming the alienation of the individual in the context of labour and breaking the dominance relations of the accumulation model. In addition, they have arisen as strategies to face employment problems. Even in cases in which the majority of the historical experiences have not been established as cognitive resources of the workers who started in self-management situations, we are interested in analyzing those political and labor practices which the workers have had and their problematic relation with capitalist organization as their main protagonists. We observe that since the beginning of the 1990s, both the recovery of factories by their workers and the increase in cooperative working associations have been set up as a non generalized modality of popular sectors to face collectively the risks of losing working inscriptions in a historical period characterized by an important process of social dis-collectivization.
