SENSE OF COHERENCE AND COPING STYLES AMONG SPORT SHOOTERS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 6
Abstract
The fundamental aim of the research was to examine the relationship between the sense of coherence and the coping styles among sport shooters. The study was conducted on 52 sportsmen (29 women and 23 men). The following tools were used for this research: The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) by Endler and Parker and The Orientation to Life Questionnalre (SOC--29) by Antonovsky. The study revealed that in the whole examined group, task-oriented coping was reported most frequently and was gender-related. Men, as compared to women, less often applied this style of coping. Furthermore, the conducted research proves that there is a difference between athletes tralning in pistol or rifle events. The first group obtained significantly lower score in the meaningfulness scale than the contestants specializing in rifle. The obtained results allow to accept a hypothesis concerning the existence of relationship between the sense of coherence and the coping styles among sport shooters. Also three components of SOC change significantly preferences for coping styles, in women and men. The results seem to confirm Antonovsky's assumptions, saying that the awareness and acceptance of their own emotions in individuals with a strong sense of coherence will be associated with less frequent use of less effective emotional style and more frequent rational, task-oriented coping.
