„Separatyzm donbaski” jako technologia geopolityczna

Abstract
The article analyzes the nature and essence of “Donbas separa¬tism”, its internal and external factors. The author proves that despite the existence of a specific territorial identity in Donbas, the “Donbas separatism” lacks the key features of “classical” separatism – namely, historic background, ethnic or religious basis, more or less stable political movement for seces¬sion, controversy over territorial affiliation in the past etc. At the same time, the article shows that the regional identity and territorial patriotism, which are based primarily on social grounds, inherent for an industrial region, were cultivated and emphasized by the local political and business elites for ideological justification of their domination in the region and mobilizing the population in the electoral struggle against political rivals. However, the direct implementation of secession actions, which was (and still is) accom¬panied by an armed confrontation, became possible only after the interven¬tion of the Russian Federation, which applied a whole arsenal of hybrid war¬fare, including informational, propagandistic, political, humanitarian, military and sabotage means. According to the author, the “Donbas separatism” has become a geopolitical technology of Kremlin within the framework of the hybrid aggression against Ukraine in order to maintain its influence by sup¬porting a permanent “hotspot” or a frozen conflict in Eastern Ukraine. In this sense the quasi-states of “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic” play the role of new limitrophes, through which Russia will try to block internal and international political steps of Ukraine that are disadvan¬tageous from the Russian point of view.
