THE DEFINITENESS AND INDEFINITENESS CATEGORY MARKERS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND THEIR CORRESPONDENCIES IN THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyse the ways of representing the meaning of the articles a and the and lexemes some and any used in the function of determiners in the Russian language. The use of comparative methods of analysis gave possibility to define different ways of representing of various meanings of the articles a / the and determiners some / any as the markers of the definiteness and indefiniteness category in the Russian language.The English articles a / the, lexemes some / any and their Russian correspondencies constitute the object of this research. The subject of research is the ways of expression of the definiteness and indefiniteness category in the Russian language. In the result of analysis of 1000 stretches of the English text and their translation into Russian there have been established the basic means of representation of the definiteness and indefiniteness category in the Russian language. Conclusions: the definiteness,expressed by the English the and some, is represented by certain Russian adjectives and pronouns (подобный, всякий at alias), the indefiniteness to which a and any point out can be represented in set expressions by pronouns любой, какой-нибудь at alias. The absence of the definiteness / indefiniteness marker before the English singular nouns is often represented in the Russian text by the plural forms of the corresponding nouns.
