The Influence of Younger or Older Position of Junior Pupils on their Educational Success and Sociometric Status

Abstract
The article shows the results of studying of role of pupil’s age position as younger or older among classmates. A total of 623 children participated in the study. The children’s ages ranged from 6 years 2 months to 10 years 4 months. The study shows that the most of classes in contemporary initial school in Ukraine is mixed age groups with average difference in 17.6 months. The younger classmates have lower educational success and worse relations with peers. 44.9% of older and only 16.7% of younger classmates have high level of educational success. 83.7% of older and 54.3% of younger classmates have favorable and 16.3 % of older and 45.7% of younger classmates have the unfavorable sociometric status. The χ2 test shows that this difference is significant on the 0.001 level. Successful social development of younger classmates is under threat. The elaboration of new pedagogical techniques for mixed-age children groups is important task of pedagogues and psychologists in Ukraine.<br/><br/>
